There’s *Snow* Place Like Home for The Holidays

There's *Snow* place like home—here are a few tips to keep yours safe.

Virginia is known for having pretty mild winters, but the 2023 Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts that this winter will be colder than normal – with above-average snowfall. While buying a big, puffy coat and gloves is definitely a good way to get ready, your home needs to be prepared to brace for the frigid weather as well. Get your home prepared for the holidays.

Whether you are a seasoned snow shoveler or you don a parka when the temperature drops below 50°F, here are our tips to prepare your house for winter weather.

  • Icy driveways and walkways are extremely dangerous. The most common winter injuries are the result of falling on ice-covered sidewalks, steps, driveways, and porches. To prevent this, keep your steps and walkways ice-free by using rock salt or another de-icing compound.
  • Before the cold sets in, it is a good idea to check around windows and doors for any cracks or holes. Filling these in will prevent heat from escaping from your house and save you money on your energy bills.
  • Make sure that your pipes are properly insulated. If your pipes freeze over, you will lose access to fresh water, and they will likely burst and flood your home. If you are expecting extreme temperatures, it is a good idea to leave the tap slightly open on your sinks to keep water flowing and prevent freezing.
  • Check your roof for broken or missing shingles and make replacements if necessary before the weather gets too severe. The additional weight of snow on a roof could cause it to buckle. Be sure to clean your gutters to prevent ice dam formation, which could cause damage and back up the water into your house.

We want you to enjoy a safe (and warm) winter season. We hope you find these tips helpful to get your home prepared for the holidays. If you want to make sure that your home is covered, no matter the weather, reach out to a Rockingham Insurance agent today.
