Little Chefs, Big Safety: Cooking Up Fun with National Fire Prevention Week

Cooking up fun. Let's embrace this theme by cooking delicious treats and a culture of safety in our kitchens.

Fall is finally here, and as the weather cools down, our kitchens are warming up with the delightful scents of pumpkin pie, gooey apple crumble, and hearty soups and stews. Cooking up fun with these warm treats is more than just a seasonal tradition; it’s a chance to bond with our little ones, create lasting memories, and share the joy of a homemade meal. But as we roll up our sleeves and reach for the mixing bowl, let’s remember that these cherished moments must be seasoned with safety.

As we celebrate National Fire Prevention Week (October 8 – 14, 2023), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reminds us that “Cooking Safety Starts With You.” Let’s embrace this theme by cooking delicious treats and a culture of safety in our kitchens.

Cooking up fun with children is a cherished tradition, but safety must always be the main ingredient. Whether they’re stirring the batter or washing veggies, little chefs must be supervised at all times. The NFPA recommends a 3-foot “no kid zone” around wherever hot food or drinks are being prepared. It’s also wise for both kids and adults to avoid loose clothing and keep long hair tied back to prevent accidents.

Choosing age-appropriate tasks is key to a successful and safe kitchen adventure. Younger children can help with mixing or decorating, while older ones might assist with reading the recipe and measuring ingredients. If you have teenagers, now is a great time to teach them how to use the stovetop safely, keeping in mind essential fire safety tips such as staying in the kitchen while cooking, using timers, and keeping flammable items away from the stove. For more tips to share with your teens, check out our Thanksgiving fire safety blog.
