Community members became members of the mutual company and had fire policies that covered whatever structures they owned, such as mills, silos, barns, and homes.

Rockingham Home Mutual Fire Insurance Company was formed in a church in Port Republic, Virginia (pictured to the right) by a group of farmers who rebuilt shortly after the end of the Civil War.
