Moving? Don’t Forget to Update Your Insurance

Moving? Make sure you start off your new adventure right, with the coverage you need. Here are 5 steps to help.

Moving is the start of a new chapter in your life, and there is nothing quite like getting settled into a new home. Despite the excitement, it can be stressful to juggle all of the planning and logistics involved. Updating your insurance policies is the last thing on your mind while you are swimming through boxes and packing tape.

However, making sure your insurance is updated should be a priority, especially if you have a big move coming up. In order to protect your new home and belongings, and avoid a lapse in coverage, here are five steps to take for your policies when you are about to move.

1. If you are moving to a new property,

You need to provide Rockingham Insurance with:

  • your new address
  • information about your new home
  • the date you are planning on moving
  • and details about any changes in your belongings or coverage needs.

This will ensure that your policy is updated in a timely manner and that your coverage is not interrupted during the move. You will also want to provide us with your new contact information so that we can reach you if necessary.

2. If you are moving,

You will have to have a brand new policy written for this new location. Your previous renters’ insurance or homeowners’ insurance policies are non-transferable when moving into a new home. Reach out to your trusted Rockingham Insurance agent so they can make sure you get the coverage you need.

3. Consider additional insurance coverage.

Moving to a new area can mean new risks that may not have been present in your previous location. For example, if you are moving to an area that is prone to flooding or earthquakes, you will want to talk with your local agent about purchasing additional insurance coverage to protect against these risks. Your agent can explain what additional coverage options may be available to you.

4. Update your auto insurance policy.

Whether you are moving to a different state or just a different part of town, you will need to contact your agent to update your auto insurance policy. They will ensure that your policy complies with the requirements of your new area.

5. Take inventory of your belongings.

Moving is a great time to take inventory of all the things you own and ensure that you have adequate coverage for your prized possessions. Make a list that includes the name of each item, and how much it’s worth, and consider taking photos or videos of your most valuable belongings. This information will be helpful if you need to file a claim in the future.

At Rockingham Insurance, we understand that moving can be overwhelming, and we’re here to help make sure your insurance is one less thing you have to worry about.
