Fire Won’t Wait. Plan Your Escape.

Fire Won't Wait. Plan Your Escape.

Do you know how much time you have to safely escape a home fire? You have about the time it will take to read this blog – likely less. Since modern homes burn faster, you have about two minutes (or less) to safely escape your home once the smoke alarm sounds.

According to 2020 statistics from the National Fire Protection Association, local fire departments across the country responded to an estimated 1.4 million fires, which resulted in 3,500 deaths, 15,200 injuries, and $21.9 billion in property damage.

This month marks the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week, and we’re urging everyone to increase their fire preparedness with a few basic fire safety and prevention tips:

  1. Prevention starts with detection: protect your home with either battery-powered or hard-wired smoke alarms. Better yet, purchase several combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to install in the garage, near furnaces, water heaters, and dryers. Test your alarms monthly and replace batteries annually. Replace the batteries if you hear your detector chirping.
  2. Purchase fire extinguishers for your home and business: Proper use of a fire extinguisher can help save lives and property. Be sure you have the right extinguisher for the type of fire you need to put out.
  3. Look for potential fire hazards: Inspect electrical and extension cords for signs of cracking or fraying and replace any switches that are buzzing or sparking. Be mindful of how your pets interact with electrical cords as well. Chewing or biting cords can pose a significant threat.  Consider hiring a professional electrician to inspect your home’s electrical system.
  4. Fire won’t wait – plan your escape: Develop a home fire escape plan and practice it often during both the day and night. Make sure all escape routes in your home are clear and that windows and doors open quickly and easily. Encourage young children to learn fire prevention and fire safety – have them take the fire safety pledge!

“If a fire starts in your home, there is a limited amount of time to react and get to safety,” says Mark Thompson, owner of Mark Thompson Insurance Agency, representing Rockingham Insurance. “A home fire escape plan is a great tool that everyone should practice often. If there are children, elderly folks, or anyone with a disability, it is even more important – the objective is to get out quickly and safely.”

This November, Rockingham Insurance is a co-sponsor for the Fire Safety Art Contest – for the 17th year in Roanoke and 14th year in Harrisonburg. The contest allows elementary and middle school students to show off their creative talents and win prizes based on submissions for this year’s fire safety theme: Fire Won’t Wait. Plan Your Escape. Stay tuned next month for our blog announcing the winners and honorable art mentions.
