Your tickets are booked, bags are packed, and crystal clear waters and palm trees await… or so you think. With all the stresses involved in preparing for a trip, many homeowners focus on what they are bringing to their destination, rather than what they are leaving behind. To make sure everything in your home stays undisturbed, follow Rockingham Insurance’s tips to vacation-proof your home – before you head out for your next adventure.
Leave some lights on.
While it is a good idea to unplug electronics, such as TVs, coffee makers, or computers, before leaving your home, remember to leave some lights on. Leaving lights on gives the appearance that someone is home and decreases the likelihood that someone would try to steal from or damage your property. Before you leave for your trip, make sure your front porch lights are on and use your favorite smart home device, such as Alexa, to turn on lamps around your home periodically.
Don’t overshare.
Though you might ask a trusted neighbor to collect your mail or water your plants while you are away, refrain from sharing your itinerary or photos of your trip on your public social media profile until you return. It is dangerous to let strangers know that your home is being left unattended for an extended period of time. Ask your trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your house, and tell them to call you (or the police) if they see anything suspicious occurring on the property.
Ensure any valuable property coming with you is covered by your policy.
Lost jewelry is one of the most common items claims are made for, so we strongly recommend protecting any expensive jewelry you have. Certain limitations do apply, so if you have to bring your great-grandmother’s pearls with you to the Bahamas, check with your local Rockingham Insurance agent before your trip to ensure they are covered.
Double-check that everything is locked.
Ensure all doors, windows, and entrances to your home are locked. Don’t forget to lock your garage door and disconnect the automatic opener as well.
Take additional seasonal precautions.
Spring weather can vary, and freezing temperatures can cause a lot of damage to your home, especially if they cause your pipes to burst. Do NOT turn off the heat before you leave – keep the temperature only a few degrees lower than you would when you are at home. Be sure to leave the cabinets under any sinks open and leave your faucets slowly dripping. This will reduce the chance of a pipe bursting while you are away.
