Beat the Heat: Four Tips to Keep Your Car Safe and Clean This Summer

Keeping your car in top condition ensures that every summer drive is enjoyable and trouble-free. Here are four tips to help you maintain your car’s health and keep it ready for any journey.

Imagine a perfect summer day: the windows down, your favorite music playing, and the road ahead inviting you to explore. This scene is what many of us look forward to on our warm weather adventures, but it requires some behind-the-scenes maintenance. Keeping your car in top condition ensures that every summer drive is enjoyable and trouble-free. Here are four tips to help you maintain your car’s health and keep it ready for any journey.

1. Closely monitor the internal parts of your vehicle

In the summer heat, many parts of your vehicle may be subjected to additional wear and tear. For example, your car’s air conditioning system will likely be overworked, which could potentially damage your engine if it overheats. Similarly, the heat can also thin the oil in your car, requiring more frequent oil changes in the summer months, and cause your brake pads, battery, belts and hoses to deteriorate faster. Be sure to monitor your fluid levels, inspect your vehicle for signs of damage, and keep an ear out for any unusual noises that could indicate a more serious issue.

2. Check your tire pressure

During the warmer months, the air inside of car tires gets hotter, which can cause them to overinflate, leading to blowouts and accidents. Overinflated tires can also reduce tire traction, as the tread of the tire edges can wear out faster. Make sure to regularly check your tire pressure to catch potential issues early.

3. Consider regular car washes

As temperatures rise, it’s more common to find tree sap, insects or pollen on your car. Regular car washes not only protect the paint on your vehicle, but reduce allergens and grime, and increase visibility when driving How often you need to wash your car depends on how often you use it and the kind of terrain you drive on. If you drive mostly on paved roads, you may only need to wash your car once or twice a month. But if you frequently travel on dirt roads, visit the shore, or drive on salted roads more frequently, you may need to wash your car as often as once a week.

4. Avoid abrasive treatments during car washes

While you can certainly wash your car at home, if you choose to take your vehicle through a commercial car wash, be sure to opt-out of harsh treatments that could potentially damage your vehicle. Many car washes offer a brush or pressure-washer treatment, but these services can strip the paint from or scratch your car. If you’re looking for additional exterior protection, consider getting a car wax instead. This treatment will help maintain your vehicle’s shiny appearance, as well as prevent scratches, dust, or water spots. A car wax also makes regular cleanings easier and can even increase your car’s resale value.

Summer is the season for memorable road trips and spontaneous adventures, making it all the more important to keep your car in excellent shape. Regular maintenance, proper tire pressure, and frequent washes contribute to a safe and clean vehicle that’s prepared for any journey.
