Lithium-Ion Batteries: Charge Into Fire Safety with Rockingham Insurance

It can start with a simple spark.
A phone charging on the couch. An e-bike left plugged in overnight. Everyday devices powered by lithium-ion batteries can quickly turn convenience into catastrophe when something goes wrong.
Lithium-ion batteries make modern life possible, fueling smartphones, laptops, tablets, digital cameras, wireless headphones, gaming controllers, smartwatches, and fitness trackers. But they can also carry risks. The Environmental Protection Agency reports that 245 fires at 64 waste facilities over just seven years were traced back to lithium-ion and lithium metal batteries.
This Fire Prevention Week, October 5 to 11, 2025, the National Fire Protection Association is highlighting lithium-ion batteries as a growing fire risk in homes with this year’s theme: “Charging Into Fire Safety.”
Here are some tips to keep your devices charged and your home flame-free:
- Only Buy Certified Products: When purchasing a device that uses a lithium-ion battery, look for a safety certification mark such as UL, ETL, or CSA. These marks indicate the product meets important safety standards.
- Charge Devices Safely:
- Always use the charger that came with the device or one approved by the manufacturer and follow their charging instructions.
- Charge devices on a hard, flat surface, like a table, instead of a bed or couch.
- Do not overcharge - unplug the device or remove the battery once it is fully charged.
- Recycle Batteries Responsibly: Never throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or in regular recycling bins, as they could ignite. Recycle them safely at a certified location. Visit call2recycle.org to find a recycling spot near you.
