The HEAT You Won’t Want to Beat: Help Virginia State Police Prevent Summer Auto Theft

When your thermostat rises, so does the risk for auto theft. With more cars on the road in the hotter months, there are, likewise, more opportunities for vehicle thieves to take advantage of unsuspecting motorists. According to the Virginia State Police (VSP), 3,531 vehicles were stolen across Virginia last summer—including 168 in the areas covering Rockingham County, Shenandoah County, and Winchester; 241 across the region including Roanoke and Lynchburg; and a staggering 740 in the Greater Richmond area.
To combat this trend, the Virginia State Police has stepped up enforcement with its Help Eliminate Auto Theft (HEAT) program. Find out below how to keep your ride safe this summer, and how you can help prevent auto theft.
What is the HEAT Program?
The Help Eliminate Auto Theft (HEAT) program is a statewide initiative designed to reduce vehicle theft and related crimes. A joint effort between the Virginia State Police and local law enforcement agencies, HEAT works by educating the public about the costly impact of auto theft and supporting officers through specialized training and resources. By increasing patrols and targeting high-risk behavior, the program aims to make Virginia’s roads safer for everyone.
What to Do If Your Vehicle is Stolen or Damaged?
If you become a victim of auto theft here are some important steps to follow:
Contact The Police to File a Report: This documentation is important for investigations and insurance claims
Notify Rockingham Insurance: You can start the claims process by filing a claim online or via phone:
- To request non-accident-related glass only claims, call (800) 662-5246.
- To request non-accident-related roadside assistance, call (866) 319-4824.
Check Your Renters or Homeowners Insurance For Coverage: Comprehensive auto policies cover physical damage and theft, but personal belongings stolen from your vehicle are usually not covered.
Ask About Rental Car Reimbursement: If you need a temporary vehicle while yours is being repaired or replaced, ask your trusted Rockingham agent about a rental car.
How Can You Help Stop Auto Theft?
The HEAT Reward Program gives you the power to make a difference in your community. If you see suspicious activity or know about any vehicle thefts, you can submit a confidential tip. If your tip leads to an arrest, you could earn a reward of up to $25,000. This process is simple, confidential, and can help you protect yourself and others.
Vehicle theft can be scary, especially when it threatens to ruin your summertime plans. But with the support of Rockingham Insurance and the Virginia State Police, you don’t have to face these challenges alone. Stay alert this summer, and remember, if you see something, say something!
